As the first point of contact for clients, you will play a key role in delivering a professional, friendly, and efficient service. You’ll also support the wider practices through proactive administrative and secretarial duties. This is a fantastic opportunity for a VAT professional who values meaningful client relationships, prioritises and invests in engagement with clients, and has a strong technical grounding in indirect tax from a tax advisory perspective. You will play a key role in managing a portfolio of valued clients, maintaining trusted relationships, and delivering proactive VAT advice that reflects both technical expertise and an understanding of clients’ real-world challenges. The role also provides scope to contribute to business development initiatives, mentoring junior colleagues, and helping grow the firm’s VAT profile. Key Responsibilities - Build strong, long-term client relationships founded on trust, responsiveness, and technical excellence. - Deliver comprehensive VAT reviews and advisory services, including advice on complex areas such as: - Partial exemption and non-business apportionment methods, including undertaking and reviewing annual adjustments. - VAT return reviews and analysis and advice on VAT liability of income streams and activities. - Property transactions and capital projects. - Support clients through HMRC interactions, including error corrections, PESM method applications, and HMRC inspections. - Support the VAT team’s growth by identifying new advisory opportunities with existing clients and sector networking. - Participate in tenders, proposals, and client presentations. - Demonstrate commercial awareness and the ability to identify where additional support or insight can add value to clients. - Collaborate closely with colleagues across tax, audit, and corporate finance teams to provide a seamless, joined-up service. - Help shape and embed best practices in VAT compliance, reporting, and advisory processes within the firm. - Maintain up-to-date knowledge of VAT legislation, case law, and HMRC practice and policy, applying it appropriately across a diverse client base. - Assist in the preparation and review of technical reports, briefings, and internal updates for the VAT team and wider firm. - Undertake technical research to resolve complex VAT queries and support senior staff on significant advisory projects. Key Requirements - Excellent technical experience in VAT, ideally gained within a professional services, consultancy, or in-house advisory setting. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to translate complex legislation into practical, client-friendly advice. - Track record of building and maintaining strong professional relationships. - Commercially astute, with a proactive mindset and client-focused approach. Additional Requirements - HMRC experience or CTA, ATT, or equivalent professional qualification (or working towards one). - Experience in liaising with HMRC on technical matters and partial exemption method applications. - Experience in preparing client training or delivering workshops. - Exposure to VAT issues in specialist areas such as property, construction, travel, non for profit, education or healthcare. - Professional, approachable, and credible with clients and colleagues alike. - Curious and committed to continuous learning and professional development. - Strong sense of ownership and accountability for client outcomes. - Enjoys working collaboratively in a supportive, people-first culture. - Resilient and adaptable in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. Description We are looking for an organised, enthusiastic Bookkeeper to join our growing Corporate Recovery (Insolvency) team. Working closely with a co-cashier, departmental manager and Insolvency Practitioners, you will provide day-to-day bookkeeping and cashiering support across a varied insolvency caseload. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong bookkeeping experience who is interested in developing specialist knowledge within insolvency.
