The Role The post-holder will ensure that a high quality, safe and efficient dispensing service is available to meet the needs of patients at all times. Operate in accordance with the Organisation dispensary Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that incorporate principles of good dispensing practice and to assist in the update and review of these SOPs as required. The post-holder will develop good working relationships with: · Healthcare professionals. Main aims and duties of the post To carry out general pharmaceutical duties in specified areas of the pharmacy Department and on wards under the direction of the Dispensary manager to ensure that services are provided in a consistently high and professional manner which is complementary to a well-managed pharmacy service, always ensuring that standards are maintained, particularly with respect to statutory professional and legal requirements, i.e.: · Complete final accuracy check of medicines. · Oversee dispensing assistants work and activity. · Provide a safe and effective routine dispensing services · Provide dispensing, medicines management and risk management support. · Dispense controlled drug prescriptions and requisitions from wards and clinic areas. · Assist in reception duties All duties will be carried out under the direction of the Chief Pharmacist/ Superintendent Pharmacist. All duties will be carried out in accordance with Organisation policies and with regard to legal and safety requirements. Main Roles and Responsibilities Receive prescriptions and ward/department requests from ward staff, assessing the urgency of requests and acting accordingly. Any problems should be referred to a Pharmacist or Dispensary manager. Receive prescriptions into the department, adhering to departmental standard operating procedures and financial instructions, providing information on waiting times. Respond to telephone and face to face queries of a routine nature from patients, their representatives and a wide range of staff groups, either in the pharmacy or on the ward within the role remit. Referring appropriate queries to the relevant member of the pharmacy team when necessary. File all dispensary generated work, including prescriptions and orders, in line with the legal requirements for the retention of pharmaceutical records. · Work in the dispensary, final accuracy checking prescriptions and provide support to the dispensary team in the co-ordination of the day to day running of the dispensary. Accurately dispense prescriptions or other medication orders, including, unlicensed drugs, controlled drugs, in-patient and out-patient prescriptions in accordance with the agreed safe systems of work practice and ensuring return of the medicines directly to patients and/or wards in order that continuity of care is ensured in a safe and timely manner. This may include some monitored dosage system dispensing. Facilitate prompt discharges, through prioritising urgent prescriptions. Provide accurate record keeping of controlled drugs kept in the pharmacy including supplies to wards and departments, orders received into the pharmacy and regular audits of the accuracy of computer and paper records. Delivering pharmaceuticals and other goods within specified time limits to sites within the wards/departments/clinical areas if required. Maintain stock levels, in the pharmacy and assisting in ensuring correct storage within the parameters of the dispensary and support turnover of stock to maintain quality. Recycling medicines, in a designated area, in accordance with set procedures for subsequent re-issue. Disposing of expired stock as per procedure. Ensure designated working areas within the department are clean and tidy to ensure safe supply of medicines. Where appropriate support stock top-up services across Organisation sites. Participate in staff meetings within the department. Comply with pharmacy Standard Operating Procedures. Contribute to clinical governance programmes, including clinical risk, incident management, investigation and reduction and to ensure compliance with department, organisation and national guidelines on medicines management issues. Inform senior pharmacy, medical or nursing staff regarding any inappropriate or dangerous use of medicines to ensure timely remedial action. Participate in pharmacy objectives set by the Organisation, the National Patient Safety Agency, the Commission for Healthcare Audit and Inspection, the Department of Health (including the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulation Agency) and others to meet clinical governance targets, develop patient care, improve clinical outcomes and ensure compliance with all standards expected for hospital pharmacy services and the interface between primary and secondary care. Participate fully in all other pharmaceutical services provided by the Pharmacy department. Participate in the development of the service to improve patient care or increase efficiency. Work as part of the pharmacy team to enable the best use of resources, skills and time. Fulfil own commitments to other team members within agreed timescales and according to overall work priorities. Understand the roles of the wider team and act to support colleagues appropriately. Treat everyone with dignity and respect. Behave in line with the Organisations values and support delivery of Organisation promises. Hold a Level 3 qualification in Pharmacy Services. Attend and participate in such training schemes and training courses for assistants as necessary to keep relevant pharmaceutical clinical and technical knowledge up to date. Successfully complete appropriate training programmes at the request of the Senior Technicians within specified periods of time. Provide advice, train or show new or less experienced members of staff aspects of their role.
