Head of Backend Engineering **Location:** Berlin (Hybrid) **Salary:** Up to €120,000 \+ Benefits We’re working with a Berlin\-based consumer entertainment platform that has become one of the leading products in its space across Europe. Following continued growth, they’re now hiring a Head of Backend Engineering to lead backend strategy, architecture, and team growth while remaining highly hands\-on technically. This is a leadership role for someone who still loves engineering. You’ll own backend direction across a modern, high\-scale platform while helping build a strong, product\-focused engineering culture. They are especially interested in profiles with: * **Founding Engineer or startup leadership experience** * **Previous experience scaling engineering teams from early stages** * **Strong product mindset and entrepreneurial mentality** * **Builders who have launched products or meaningful side projects** Responsibilities * Own backend architecture and technical direction * Lead and mentor a growing backend engineering team * Stay close to the codebase through design, reviews, and implementation * Drive scalability, reliability, and platform performance * Collaborate with Product and senior leadership on roadmap planning * Improve engineering standards, delivery processes, and system design practices The stack is flexible, but strong experience in several areas is expected: * Golang preferred OR Python, Node.js * Distributed systems \& API architecture * GCP and cloud infrastructure * Microservices architecture * SQL / NoSQL databases * CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices * Observability and production monitoring Why This Opportunity? * Chance to shape backend engineering at scale * Leadership without losing hands\-on technical ownership * Entrepreneurial engineering culture * High\-autonomy environment with significant product impact * Berlin hybrid working setup
