Organization: ATC Training Room 3 Job Summary: JOB SUMMARY Provides services to intercollegiate athletes who have impairments, functional limitations or changes in physical function and health status as a result of injury, illness or other causes, with some guidance. Actively collaborates with the health care/educational team. Serves as a liaison for VUMC to the University by providing education, awareness and sports medicine services. . Intercollegiate Athletic Trainer Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) Position Summary Vanderbilt University Medical Center is seeking an experienced and motivated Intercollegiate Athletic Trainer to support Division I student‑athletes through high‑quality sports medicine care. This role provides services to athletes who experience injuries, functional limitations, or changes in physical function or health status. The Athletic Trainer collaborates daily with a multidisciplinary healthcare and educational team and serves as a liaison between VUMC Sports Medicine and the University’s athletic programs. Term Position Information This is a Term position. A Term position is a staff position that is expected to exist for a period longer than six months, but generally not beyond one year. Although a position may exist for a specified or indefinite period, staff who accept Term positions are not guaranteed employment for the entire period; they are employed for indefinite periods within the limit of the appointment. There are no guarantees of continued employment, either within the term or when the term ends. Hires in term positions are bound by all VUMC policies and procedures and must successfully complete an initial orientation period. Staff members in term positions are eligible for certain benefits. Sports Assignment This role will be assigned to one of the following sports: Men’s Basketball Soccer/Lacrosse Track/Cross-Country Football/Bowling Sport assignment is determined based on experience, program needs, and departmental structure. Key Responsibilities Provide prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and return‑to‑play services for student‑athletes with injuries or health-related concerns. Collaborate with physicians, physical therapists, strength and conditioning staff, and athletic administrators to ensure coordinated athlete care. Maintain complete documentation, injury tracking, and communication consistent with VUMC, NCAA, and team protocols. Educate student‑athletes on injury prevention, health promotion, recovery strategies, and performance optimization. Support practice and game coverage, including travel as required by the sport assignment. Serve as a professional representative of VUMC within the collegiate athletics environment. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree strongly preferred. BOC Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC). Eligible for Tennessee state licensure. Experience working with intercollegiate or elite athletes preferred. Strong clinical reasoning, communication skills, and ability to work effectively in a team-oriented setting. Patient Documentation (Fundamental Awareness): Has limited experience, training, direct exposure, or past experience working with patient documentation. TREATMENT IMPLEMENTATION Term Prof (FUNDAMENTAL AWARENESS):: Demonstrates proficiency in providing treatment consistent with physician prescription and established plan of care. Able to modify treatment plan as needed to demonstrate provision of skilled therapy services including progression of treatment throughout course of care, and revision of treatment interventions of goals not met. May supervise and direct volunteers and students. Selects and follows correct protocol for care and utilize evidence based treatments. DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: The Athletic Trainer is a member of the Sports Medicine outreach team. In this capacity they have a responsibility to the organizations for the evaluations, treatment, rehabilitation, and medical referral to a consultant. Their primary patients are athletes and individuals associated with athletic programs. Supervision- Reports directly to Director LA Sports Medicine Alliance RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Demonstrates proper taping, strapping, bracing, and fitting of athletic equipment. Develops training programs and routines designed to improve athletic performance on the play area. Ability to accurately evaluate and assess the injury to ensure proper treatment if needed. Carries out all prescribed treatments and recommendations by the team/program/event physician. Cover assigned pre-season physicals, sports games or matches, and related events under the supervision of the program manager. Communicate with parents, athletic coaches, etc., recommendations for handling aspects of care relating to athletic injuries. EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE A degree in Athletic Training from an institution accredited by CAATE; NATA Certified; Louisiana licensure. 1-2 years in athletic training setting preferred. CPR certified; Current Louisiana Athletic Trainer license; Annual CEU requirement; Valid driver's license. Ability to read, write and speak intelligible English; Strong quantitative, analytical, and organizational skills; Ability to communicate orally and in written form. Must be detail oriented. Requires emotional stability and maturity; Must be adaptable to change, be decisive, and demonstrate foresight; Exhibits organizational and leadership ability. Must be team oriented with strong interpersonal skills. Physical Demands/Work Environment Must be able to assist with or transfer athletes of various weights/heights, push carts with athletic equipment on them. Must be able to carry water coolers, athletic training kit, etc. up to 50 pounds. May be required to stand for long periods of time. Must have good mobility skills and be able to walk long distances. Must demonstrate ability to communicate to give adequate directions and instructions to subordinates.
