VOTING COORDINATOR
Disability Rights South Carolina (DRSC) is a private, statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and advocating for the legal, civil, and human rights of individuals with disabilities. DRSC believes that people with disabilities are individuals first and should be the primary decision-makers in all aspects of their lives. Our goals include ensuring safety and protection, promoting community integration, and providing equal access for people with disabilities. This position is essential to achieving these objectives. The PAVA (Protection and Advocacy for Voting Access) Coordinator oversees programs that ensure individuals with disabilities have equal access to voting. This role involves attending outreach events to facilitate voter registration and provide essential voting information. The coordinator will visit facilities where people with disabilities reside to share information about voter registration and the voting process. They will also conduct training sessions for community partners and poll workers regarding the accessibility of polling places and monitor the accessibility of these locations. Additionally, the coordinator will foster relationships with community partners to educate individuals about voter registration and their voting rights. This position requires excellent organizational and communication skills, along with a commitment to collaborating with community partners and individuals with disabilities. Core Responsibilities: 1. Plan and attend community outreach events to educate voters with disabilities about their rights, including registration and the use of accessible voting equipment. 2. Organize outreach events for individuals with disabilities living in facilities and residential settings to inform them about voting registration and the voting process. 3. Conduct physical accessibility surveys of polling locations to identify barriers (e.g., parking, entrances, and voting area layout) and advocate for the necessary changes. 4. Provide or facilitate training for election officials and poll workers on how to effectively assist voters with various disabilities. 5. Participate in non-partisan disability voting coalitions to promote voter turnout and enhance system-wide accessibility. 6. Lead the South Carolina Disability Voting Coalition by convening meetings, establishing direction and agendas, and recruiting a diverse statewide membership. 7. Engage in the Disability Rights South Carolina (DRSC) annual goal and priority-setting process. 8. Prepare quarterly reports for the DRSC Board and annual federal reports (such as the Protection \& Advocacy Voting Access report) for the PAVA program. 9. Research voting policy and maintain in-depth knowledge of voting rights. 10. Collaborate with DRSC staff on communication and marketing efforts. 11. Perform other responsibilities as needed to assist the Executive Director. Key Qualifications: Education: The minimum educational requirement is a bachelor's degree in public administration, social work, or a related field, along with relevant work experience in public speaking and community coalition building. Required Skills: Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of DRSC. Ability to collaborate effectively with other disability advocacy organizations, community partners, and DRSC staff. Skill in collaborating with individuals with disabilities and communicating respectfully and effectively, using a Person-First approach. Ability to meet deadlines set by the Executive Director. Capability to work independently, often in a remote or hybrid setting. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Proficient in public speaking for training and outreach events. Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. In-state travel is necessary for this position, and out-of-state travel may be required for training and conferences. Some evening and weekend hours will be necessary. DRSC employees work remotely but must attend office meetings and training sessions. The Voting Coordinator may need to travel to Columbia for committee hearings during the legislative session.
